During my first year studying in the United States, one feeling stood out clearly.
Back in China, many traditional holidays seemed to pass naturally. There would be zongzi at home for the Dragon Boat Festival and mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival. Eating one on the day never felt like a particularly big event.
But after moving abroad, I found that I did not want to miss a single Chinese holiday.
When the Dragon Boat Festival came around, I wanted zongzi. If I could not find the right kind, I learned to make them myself. On the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, I had to have at least one bite of mooncake, and I would make a point of going outside to look at the moon. Sometimes, when mooncakes were hard to find, I even made them myself.
Perhaps this is what the old line means: holidays make us miss our families even more.
Once you are far from home, holidays you used to take for granted suddenly carry a different weight. What you want is not merely a mooncake. You want to recover a familiar flavor and the feeling of celebrating on that particular day.
So as Mid-Autumn Festival approached this year, my first question was: can I buy mooncakes in China and consolidate them for shipment to the United States?

I checked Cainiao's restricted-item checker
Here is the short answer: as of September 1, 2026, entering “mooncake” in Cainiao's restricted-item checker with the United States selected as the destination returned “not shippable” and classified the item as food.
Do not buy mooncakes and send them to the consolidation warehouse first. If you want them on Mid-Autumn Festival, buying from a local Asian supermarket or U.S. online retailer is usually more reliable.

Why can't mooncakes ship if the website lists a food route?
Cainiao's U.S. website currently lists an “Air Food Line - Tax-Inclusive Express” route, but the existence of a food route does not mean every food item is accepted. The item-level checker still marks mooncakes, tea, and nuts as not shippable.
Food forwarding to the United States is currently not supported.
My experience: buy for the festival or wait for a post-holiday discount?
Mooncakes at U.S. Asian supermarkets and online stores are usually most expensive before and during Mid-Autumn Festival. The Yami listing for a MEI-XIN lava custard mooncake gift box that I checked was priced at $75.99; prices above $60 for similar MEI-XIN gift boxes are not unusual.

From my own experience:
A few days after Mid-Autumn Festival, some Asian supermarkets may reduce gift boxes priced above $60 to the $30 range.
Another week later, clearance prices may fall to around $10.
If inventory remains unsold, a few boxes may eventually appear at $3 or even $1.
This is only a personal observation. It does not mean every store, brand, or year will follow the same pattern. Always check the expiration date and storage condition when buying clearance food.

If you definitely want a mooncake on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month and do not mind the price difference, buy one locally from a U.S. Asian supermarket or Yami. If you simply want to try one cheaply, you can wait for post-holiday clearance, but popular flavors may sell out first.
Take only two steps before ordering
- Enter the specific item name in Cainiao's restricted-item checker in the app or on the website, and select the United States as the destination. Do not search only for “gift” or “snack.”
- If the result says “not shippable,” stop. Do not buy the item for the warehouse. If the item is missing from the checker or the result is unclear, send the product link and ingredient list to Cainiao customer service before purchasing.
Eligible items: use the Cainiao shipping promo code USAVE
Check restrictions first, then use the promo code.
The Cainiao U.S. shipping promo code USAVE applies only to items that can be transported normally. It cannot turn mooncakes or another item marked as not shippable into an eligible shipment. We still wish you a happy Mid-Autumn Festival and hope you get to enjoy a mooncake.
If you have other eligible Taobao products to consolidate to the United States, enter USAVE when paying the international shipping fee to apply the available discount.
