Praying is talking to the universe. Meditation is listening to it.

Paul Coelho

Happiness, not in another place but this place...not for another hour, but this hour.

Walt Whitman

We’re so deeply conditioned to be lost in thought and to be having this conversation with ourselves from the moment we wake up to the moment we fall asleep, it’s just chatter in the mind, and it’s so captivating that we’re not even aware of it.

We are essentially in a dream state. And it’s through this veil of thought that we go about our day and perceive our environments. But we are just talking to ourselves nonstop. And until you can break that spell and begin to notice thoughts themselves as objects of consciousness, just arising and passing away, you can’t even pay attention to your breath or to anything else with any kind of clarity.

Sam Harris

Meditation is turning off society and listening to yourself. It only "works" when done for its own sake.

Meditation is intermittent fasting for the mind. Too much sugar leads to a heavy body, and too many distractions lead to a heavy mind. Time spent undistracted and alone, in self-examination, journalling, and meditation, resolves the unresolved and takes us from mentally fat to fit.

Naval Ravikant

People who haven’t tried to meditate have very little sense that their minds are noisy at all. And when you tell them that they’re thinking every second of the day, it generally doesn’t mean anything to them. It certainly doesn’t strike most of them as pathological. When these people try to meditate, they have one of two reactions: Some are so restless and besieged by doubts that they can hardly attempt the exercise. “What am I doing sitting here with my eyes closed? What is the point of paying attention to the breath?” And, strangely, their resistance isn’t remotely interesting to them. They come away, after only a few minutes, thinking that the act of paying close attention to their experience is pointless.

But then there are the people who have an epiphany similar to yours, where the unpleasant realization that their minds are lurching all over the place becomes a goad to further inquiry. Their inability to pay sustained attention—to anything—becomes interesting to them. And they recognize it as pathological, despite the fact that almost everyone is in the same condition.

Sam Harris

But remember, in the beginning when you close your eyes, they are not really closed. You carry images from the outside inside and you will find the same society reflected. But if you continue simply moving, moving, moving inside, sooner or later the society will be left out. You are in, society is out - you have moved from the periphery to the center.

Osho

Hiking is walking meditation. Journalling is writing meditation. Praying is gratitude meditation. Showering is accidental meditation. Sitting quietly is direct meditation.

Naval Ravikant
